Remembering mum

Created by Rachel 13 years ago
Julie Rosemary Heenan, our mum was born at her grandmother’s house on the 15th July 1955. Mum attended Wroughton infants and junior school, and completed her education at Claydon secondary modern school. At senior school mum excelled in cookery and needle work, she continued this on after school and enjoyed making a lot of her own clothes when she was younger. When she had us she learned to knit and used to make our clothes, which made her a great mum and saved her a lot of money. At the age of 12 mum joined the girl guides and became a queens guide by her 16th birthday. Mum also was a ranger guide and a young leader. After school mum became a cadet house mother at the East Anglian school for deaf and partially sighted children. After qualifying mum worked as a house mother in schools at Brighton and Bury St Edmonds. Before getting married mum did a lot with her life this included going to the Holy land, also mum went to Brighton by the sea with the missionaries in the summer. Mum always has had a strong belief in God and her faith has helped her through her life crises, and helped her through her last few years. As soon as we were old enough mum taught us how to swim, when she heard about swimming lessons at Ashley Downs school in the evening, mum took us to have lessons. The swimming teacher that taught us had an accident, she approached mum to go in the water with the children, while she teached from the side. This got mum into teaching children how to swim and mum soon had her own class, teaching beginners. From this mums love of the water soon had her very busy, this includes teaching Rookies which is teaching youngsters how to save lives. Also taking up a career in life guarding. When we went away once a year with the Salavtion Army, mum used to always be the designated life guard, mum kept to the rules but we used to be sneaky and do the occasional bomb. Hehe. Rachel's memories: I have many memories of mum she was a very special lady. I’ll never forget my wedding day as mum made it that bit more special by just being mum. Mum had her cheerful smile with her all day right to the end she refused to go to bed until the rest of us went, even though she was tired she was still on the dance floor until the last song. As a family we used to go to Spain on holidays, as tradition when mum still drank we used to always have a jug of sangria or two in the evenings. One year this Bar man took fancy to mum and he put more spirits in it and it were strong, but good so mum was the one we gave the money to get more in. Even with this mum still wouldn’t let me go clubbing well I was underage but no harm asking! Also when we went away you could guarantee mum would find out what day the market was on and would make sure we went. We also spent a lot of time on the beach and exploring where we were staying. I always remember our friends being round and if they stayed over on a Saturday night mum would always say they could stay but they had to come to church the next morning. The only exception to this was the students we used to have stay with us in the summer. We used to have all different nationalities including French, German, Spanish and Italian. We even had a few request to come back and stay as they liked being part of our family, mum made everyone feel so welcome. Mum was a dedicated lady and she gave her all in what she did. Her calendar was always full with different activities but she always found time to be with her girls. I’ll always remember you mum as being a great mum to us, I hope I can do a good job like you did when my baby arrives. I know you will be watching me as I take the next step of my life of being a mum I hope I make you proud mum. I can’t thank you enough for all you have done for us love you always mum. Hannah's memories: Mum was always there for us as a mother, whenever we needed her she was there. I can remember the time when I went into hospital for an operation at the age of thirteen. I didn’t want her to leave me during the night and she stayed there for the entirety of my stay on a fold out bed, looking back now I can just imagine how uncomfortable it must have been for her but she still stayed. For many years as a family we went on holiday with the Salvation Army. Once there it was a time honoured tradition to go ice-skating. It was so funny watching mum getting onto the ice; she would ease herself onto the ice and would only take baby steps going round holding onto the side. When you did finally prise her off the side she had someone either side of her and she skated like a michellin man. She had to always take a spare pair of trousers with her though, as she spent half the time on her bum than standing. Some people would say they would hate to work with a parent, but I loved working with mum lifeguarding. The perks came when I took on too much work and all I would have to do was to give mum a call and she would come and finish a shift. One thing I do remember is she always worked you hard. When they had a retirement party for one of the staff no-one wanted to work, so mum and I volunteered, mum said the faster you work the more time you have to spend at the party afterwards. So here was us scrubbing the changing rooms and mum turned to me and said, “haven’t you finished that yet,” there was me dripping in sweat I don’t think I was working hard enough for her liking. Mum has teached us all many life skills that we will treasure, like how to cook though some people would say I still have a lot to learn, how to iron, sew and sort washing. At the end of the day mum will be with us all today and forever always looking over our shoulders guiding us, and being inside our hearts. She touched so many peoples lives in different ways along her walk of life. We will all miss you mum but we know you will always be there for us by our side. Naomi's memories: I’ll remember mum by all the good times that we shared together, and the giggles that we had. One of these memories is when mum and dad used to take us camping at eastern farm park, we used to wake up extra early put on our wellies and go and feed the lambs. Mum used to joke with us that this was the only time that she could get us out of bed early, and have a bit of time to herself. We used to go on a lot of camping trips as mum liked going away in the caravan, and we loved it. Also as camping was a cheap holiday we used to have more of them throughout the year, which meant we could spend more quality time together as a family, which mum loved, until we got the water pistols out. My most special memory of mum is when me and mum went to Malta, as it was so hot we used to explore in the morning then make sure we get back to sun bathe. As it was so hot we used to sweat just laying on our sun beds, so we had to keep jumping into the pool every 10mins to cool off!!! Me and mum also went and swam with dolphins, we planned this before we went on the holiday, and were really looking forward to it. When we got there it was better then we thought, I remember me and mum being so excited that we were finally going to swim with and touch dolphins. When it was mums turn to swim with them I remember her looking so happy, with her big smile on her face, it made the experience feel so much more special. I can honestly say that these two weeks were the best two weeks of my life, me and mum had so many laughs and just spending quality time together was great. Thanks mum:D. There are so many more memories that I will treasure of my time with you mum, and look back on and smile. I know that you will always be by my side looking after me, in every thing I do. You will always be close by and will always be a big part of our lives. I will miss you so much mum, love you always.
